Contest Participation

{Self-reflection} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/01/12; 1:02pm; f/5.6; 1/100 sec; ISO 200; self-timer.

I created this entry by setting up a mirror in front of the camera. I put the camera on the window sill on a self-timer. I just took a bunch of different shots and angles doing my makeup. I liked this one because I put the mirror in focus and then I wasn’t in focus. I think it expresses what I was trying to go for and the idea of the “mirror” being the main idea in the photograph. I thought it would be a good idea to get a picture of me doing my makeup to show an interest of mine and also a belief of mine, which is the idea that I believe in being the best I can possibly be. For the editing, I just touched up my face slightly, added a warming filter, increased the color of my eyes and lips and removed a couple blemishes. I think its interesting how judges have different tastes and ideas for the entries than what you would. I was surprised to get second place for this photo when I felt like there were a lot of really good entries.

This was for the first Photographics Society contest called “Personal Vision.” This was for the print contest, so we had to print it off 8×10, which I did at Walmart. I submitted this entry May 1st and I chose this photo because I love makeup and I think it is important to accentuate the way you look through taking care of yourself. I don’t believe in changing who you are, but I believe in constantly being the best person you can be inside and out. I wanted to show this in a photo by putting makeup on in the mirror. I also thought it was applicable to do a self-portrait for the personal vision category. I think the topic of personal vision is a good idea because who is better at photographing things about yourself than you? I also chose to do this contest so that I could qualify for Photoshop world. I won $40 from getting second place from the judges choice.

Re-do Panos

{Overlooking Rexburg} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/13/12; 6:51pm; 5 shots taken; f 13.0; 1/400; ISO 200; Canon Rebel EOS T3i.

{Silos} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/13/12; 6:22pm; 3 shots taken; f 23; 1/1600; -2 Exposure; Canon Rebel EOS T3i.

***For the re-do I just had to add on the old pictures and I also changed the silo pano and did only 3 photos instead of 5 because I felt like it looked better.

I went out out about 20 minutes out of Rexburg to get the first pano. It was up on a hill overlooking this large valley. I took a lot of different shots of that and had to mess around with different ones because some of them weren’t overlapped as much as they needed to be. The second one was of some silos outside of Rexburg about 15 minutes. There is a long stretch of them, which made for a really cool pano. The problems I had were with the tri-pod adjusting the right way. I also noticed that the more pictures you put together the more stretched out the pano looks.

Final Poster

1. Bannack Beauty 24×36
2. Bannack State Park, Montana; 05/24/12; 3:45pm.
3. Canon EOS Rebel T3i; Evaluative metering mode; Manual; f/6.3; 1/40 sec; ISO 400.
4. Levels, Heal tool, Brush tool, hue and saturation, color balance, sharpening with high pass, darker layer, lighter layer, warming and curves.
5. I chose this picture because first of all I loved her expression, I loved the way her dress was touching her face, I liked the intensity of her eyes, and I love the way her hair looked. This was my best shot of her during the shootout and I love portraits, so I decided to print this one. She is so pretty, so she makes for a great portrait model. I photographed her near a window that wasn’t totally clear so the light would be softer on her face. Sister Esplin used a light on the other side of her face for some fill light. I used evaluative metering to focus in on her eyes. I used a shutter of 1/40 to get more light in, but I had to make sure it was pretty still so it didn’t turn out blurry. When I edited her, I first started out with healing blemishes and then I airbrushed her face. I made her eyes pop with a saturation/hue level and then did a black mask so I could mask out her green eyes a little. I sharpened with high pass just a bit. I also added some levels and different layers to make sure the lighting looked great. I used the color balance so her face didn’t look as red. I added some actions as well to give the picture more of an old look. The action had warming, lighter layer, darker layer and crispness. I loved the way it ended turning out.

Re-Do Portraits

1. Side Composition-

{Sisterly Love} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/16/12; 7:41pm; f 1.8; 1/1600; ISO 400; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

2. Head or Head/Shoulders-

{Brittany} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/19/12; 5:44pm; f 5.6; 1/1600; ISO 400; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

{Smiles} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/19/12; 5:59pm; f 5.6; 1/1328; ISO 200; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

{Brittany} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/19/12; 5:19pm; f 7.1; 1/800; ISO 200; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

*For the Head or Head/Shoulders re-do I added different pictures that had better coloring, lighting and were more interesting to look at. I also tried to dim down the eyes a bit and made sure that there weren’t things in the background that were too distracting. I toned down the green wall so it wasn’t as distracting.

3. Individual/Full Body-

{Gray} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/19/12; 5:51pm; f 5.6; 1/400; ISO 200; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

*For the Individual/Full Body re-do post I chose a different picture that I felt had better composition and there weren’t things in the background that were distracting from the subject. I know the shirt and wall are both gray, but I still think you focus on her face and it works for this picture.

4. Group Activity-

{For the Touchdown} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/18/12; 9:10pm; f 5.6; 1/64; ISO 1600; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

5. Group Posed-

{Boys will be boys} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/20/12; 7:47pm; f 5.6; 1/500; ISO 800; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

{Posed} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/20/12; 7:30pm; f 5.6; 1/100; ISO 800; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

{The Guys} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/20/12; 7:28pm; f 5.6; 1/250; ISO 800; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

*For the Group Posed re-do post I brightened and touched up the top two pictures and I chose a different picture as a third one. I also brightened and touched up the picture and added some filters on it to give it an older/seventies type look.

6. Group Environmental

{Hair Salon} Rexburg, Idaho; 5/19/12; 1:58pm (above was 2:15pm); f 2.8; 1/60; ISO 400; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

*For the Group Environment re-do post, I brightened up the subjects a little bit more and airbrushed the girls face in the top one. I wanted to make sure that the subjects were brighter and more of the focal point.

I did everything that Dustin asked me to do to make the portraits better and to enhance them. Portraits are always fun to do because its always a challenge to capture expressions and natural emotion. It is also challenging to get shots that no one else has before. I took a lot of different shots in different areas. I wanted to mix it up and get different backgrounds. I liked the green wall because I feel like it complimented her features, but I toned it down so it wasn’t as harsh.  I noticed that you have to be aware what is in the background, what kind of lighting you have, and the expressions that people are making.

Re-do Portrait Edits

{Chantelle} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/16/12; 7:49pm; 1/200; f 1.8; ISO 400; Canon EOS Rebel t3i.

I used match color to match the color of the blown out image to the other ones I took. I replaced the color of her lips to a more pink color. I also completely darkened her hair and eyebrows in camera raw with the paintbrush tool. I cleaned up her face with the heal tool and removed blemishes. I used the paint tool to airbrush and used the dodge tool to make her eyes brighter.

{Sisterly Love} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/16/12; 7:41pm; f 1.8; 1/1600; ISO 400; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

{Channy} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/16/12; 7:41pm; f 1.8; 1/1600; ISO 200; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

I took the a the first picture with the good coloring and matched it on the second one. I replaced the colors of her lips again to make them more pink. I also spot treated her, used color burn on her eyelashes to create more eyelashes and make eye-liner, and I used the brush tool to airbrush her face.

{Brooke} Rexburg, Idaho; 05/20/12/ 4:17pm; f 4.5; 1/15; ISO 200; Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

For this one I matched the color of the slightly blown out one to the next one underneath and it just made it look a little less blown out. I changed the color of her shirt to a more purple color. I enhanced her face and eyelashes a little bit for the editing part.

I loved doing portraits because one of my favorite things to do is capture people in their environments, capture emotion and capture them in candid shots. I think there is so much emotion you can draw out of portraits. I tried to take pictures from all different angles and with different poses as well. I took well over 1,000 shots for the portraits and it is interesting how you can have a select few as your favorite. I realized for the posed portraits how important it is to mix up the scenes, to mix up the outfits, to mix up the looks, and mix up the angles because sometimes you think something will look good when it doesn’t. I loved editing the pictures because it really just enhanced the look.
